| Joyous and Harmonious Alternative PE by: Joy Marie Dunlap, LightHome Publications Joyous and Harmonious Alternative PE By Joy Marie Dunlap
My husband and I questioned the helpfulness of competition early in our marriage and then further questioned it as our kids developed less healthy relationships through competition.
It wasn’t that they couldn’t win. But how does beating the other guy at something help develop the kind of love in a family that God wants, that comes alongside the other person to help them achieve, to help bear their load, to give and share and care and build up others?
We decided that PE in our homeschool would consist of non-competitive physical fitness training. We sought God about how to do this and took the simple first step of setting up different activity “stations” for developing hand-eye coordination, where each child could go from station to station and compete with himself to get better at his own coordination.
From there, God led us to using parks for PE. At first, we simply let the kids run to the play equipment that would strengthen their bodies across a broad area of muscles: climbing up to the slide, pumping their feet under a swing, swinging on the monkey bars. We also found balancing equipment for them to use, including balance beams and a rope tower.
Next, we started going on short walks. Our walks led us through beautiful places with wildflowers blooming, rabbits sitting still or racing away, birds singing in trees, butterflies in wildflowers, rippling streams revealing tiny frogs, and other great delights to our children. As our kids saw these delights around them, their eagerness to experience more of God’s nature led them to walk further and further, until they were able to walk a mile without tiring.
This was all done in an atmosphere of delight. We let them run up and roll down hills, balance on stepping stones, skip and sing, climb up and down stairs, balance on low stone walls, climb trees and rocks, hike up to lookout towers, feed ducks, explore dry river beds, catch frogs and lizards, run after butterflies, smell flowers, and just fully enjoy this beauty.
As these delight-directed walks taken several times a week strengthened their legs, they began going further still, walking, scootering, bicycling, or pulling each other in wagons for 2 or 3 miles. We joined a nature walk program and when they had their annual Night Hike, walking 4 miles in rugged terrain, our kids were at the very head of the long line of kids and parents, and were not stressed or out of breath at all. As they grew older, our kids became more interested in identifying wildlife. They began carrying field guides, binoculars and clipboards in their backpacks, and would stop in the middle of a walk or bike ride to identify birds. By high school graduation they had identified over 250 birds, and they were walking or bicycling 3 to 6 miles a day and enjoying it. This had its effect on all areas of life. If we had to park at the far end of a big parking lot, for example, it didn’t seem like a long walk at all.
Over all those years with vigorous outdoor non-competitive PE, we grew very close as a family, and learned to really enjoy one another. We all look back on those years of outdoor time as such a delight, such refreshment, such a unifying experience! We just had to share this with other homeschooling families, and so we have, in our penmanship book called A-Z Have a Wonderful Walk, with over 100 color photos of our kids having glorious PE fun over a 12-year period, from tots to teens.
You can have this same glorious experience with this full-color penmanship book to start you off, which will inspire your kids to want to have their own wonderful walks! Combine penmanship with PE using A-Z Have a Wonderful Walk. Then read the chapter on photography and add art to the mix. See just how much fun homeschooling can be!

| Pick of the Week | This book is both an inspiration to kids to encourage them to enjoy family walks and also an inspiration and guide to parents on how to make family walks and exercise at the park enjoyable for the whole family, tots to teens. At the back of the copywork pages is a complete guide covering everything from how to avoid family quarrels and helping kids learn how to treat one another to how to photograph your own kids on family walks. Joy Marie covers both the practical aspects, such as bringing along snacks, drinks and jackets, and the spiritual and inspirational side of being close to God, the Creator, on a walk.
