Deeper Than We Think
When I first opened Eric Carle’s book Have You Seen My Cat? and read it to my grandson, my first thoughts were how simple this book was. Within minutes, Ethan was yelling “That’s not my cat!” and pointing, jumping, and squealing. That’s when I knew Eric Carle is a genius. He is not a best seller of children’s books simply because he puts simple ideas with simple words. There were hats, cultures, housing, and the obvious types of cats involved in this book. It was deeper than I gave it credit for. How quickly we pass over something because it seems too simple for our kids. Maybe we have looked at a file and there didn’t seem to be enough pizzazz, bling, or whistles to it. We look at things through our adult eyes and forget that our children do not see things the way we do. They do not process or think like we do. They see activities in totally different ways.
Many people have tried Sue Patrick’s Workbox system. I bought the file and as soon as I saw it, I thought “Oh, how simple. I could have thought of that”. That was my initial reaction. Then I read some more and realized I hadn’t thought of that! And upon implementing the ideas for my sons and adapting it for my own productivity, I found out that this was deeper than I first thought. There was a hidden purpose behind this idea. Things were chosen for a reason.
Passing over “simple” things can be a common trap we fall into when looking at any curriculum. There was a bit of an era in the homeschool movement when there was a sense of pressure that learning must, to some degree, equal suffering. There was an apologetic tone if we seemed to have an extremely easy week. Could they really have learned if no one cried or had a meltdown? I am glad that time in homeschooling history seems to have hit the road and we are given so many more options to meet every child’s needs in school. When looking over curriculum here on Currclick, don’t pass over files because they seem simple to you or their concept appears too easy. Many of the things you see have been specifically designed for learning styles and publishers have taken standard subjects and adapted them to meet specific learning needs. It may be that your learning style doesn’t see the significance of an activity that your child will benefit from. The best thing to do is to find a new idea you can afford and try it on the kids.
I would have missed an incredible time with my little Ethan if I had thought that book too simple for him. Instead, we had so much fun that his uncles were recording us reading that story together. Try something simple today as it may actually be deeper than you think!
