Chemistry is a science that ‘deals with the composition and properties of substances and various elementary forms of matter’.  In simple terms, chemistry is the study of matter and everything around us is made of matter. It helps explain how God put the world together and how it works. Chemistry matters!  During this class, students will get a very thorough understanding of the foundations of chemistry.  This class will help prepare students for a college level chemistry course.

This class is a high school level course and can be taken before or after Biology. Students should have a good working knowledge of algebra, having completed at least Algebra 1 or be taking it along with the class.

Topics covered:

Chapter 1: Measurements, significant figures, scientific notation

Chapter 2: Mixtures, mass, Dalton’s atomic theory

Chapter 3:  Periodic table, Isotopes, Electromagnetic spectrum, Bohr model

Chapter 4: Modern view of atoms, Electron configuration, Lewis structures, ionic compounds

Chapter 5:  Covalent compounds, Polar covalent bonds, Polar vs Non-polar

Chapter 6: Physical and chemical changes, Kinetic theory of matter, balancing equations, Formation and decomposition reactions, combustion reactions

Chapter 7: Mole concept, limiting reactions, Stoichiometry

Chapter 8: Empirical and molecular formulas, polyatomic ions

This is a YEAR LONG (2 semesters Fall and Winter) course covering 16 chapter but each semester must be purchased individually.  Fall semester runs Aug- Dec. Winter semester will be Jan-May.

The textbook to be used is Discovering Design with Chemistry by Dr. Jay Wile.  (Textbooks are not included.  Books are available through www.bereanbuilders.com as well as several online retailers.)

The class will meet once a week. Please allow 1 1/2 hours for class. Each chapter will take 2 weeks to complete.  Students will be responsible for answering the chapter questions and participating in the review of these questions in class.  Each chapter also has a test which will be graded.  During the year, students will be assigned several labs reports to complete for a grade.

Some of the experiments will be done during class or can be viewed via videos. Students are encouraged to complete as many labs as possible in order to use this course as a lab credit.

THIS CLASS WILL BE TAUGHT FROM A BIBLICAL, CREATIONIST POINT OF VIEW.

About the teacher:

About the Teacher: My name is Debbie Mackin with HIS Creation Science. I received my BS in Medical Technology degree from the University of Tampa and my clinical certification from Duke University Medical Center, Department of Allied Health. After working in clinical labs for almost 12 years, I left to be a full time at home mom at the birth of my oldest. I have 2 children and have always homeschooled them (my oldest graduated in May 2014 and my youngest graduated in 2017). I have a passion to help kids see our Awesome Creator through the study of science! I am a firm believer that science and faith do not need to be separate but rather the study of science can confirm scripture and strengthen our faith. By studying the creation around us, we can better know our Creator. I look forward to seeing you in class as we learn more about our Awesome Creator!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
