"This course concentrates on marine wildlife and marine habitats. It provides a survey of members of each biological kingdom that live in marine environments. The student will learn about the microscopic organisms that make life in the ocean possible, including details about their interesting habits and life cycles. The student will also learn about the anatomy of many macroscopic marine creatures such as clams, starfish, and sharks. The student will then learn how these creatures and their physical surroundings form marine ecosystems such as intertidal zones, estuaries, coral reefs, continental shelf communities, epipelagic communities, and deep-ocean communities. The course ends with a study of marine resources and our relationship with the sea." (Apologia website)

PREREQUISITE:  High school level biology is suggested.

The course covers a wide-range of topics during the 2nd semester such as:

  • The Intertidal Zone
  • Estuary Communities
  • Coral Reefs
  • Continental Shelf Communities
  • The Epipelagic Zone
  • The Deep Ocean
  • Ocean Resources
  • Effects of Humans on the Sea

This is the 2nd semester of a YEAR LONG  (2 semesters Fall and Winter) course covering 16 modules.  New students are welcome to join us for 2nd semester.

The textbook to be used is Exploring Creation with Marine Biology.  (Textbooks are not included.  You may purchase directly from Apologia or look at other online retailers that sell these books.) The class will meet once a week. Please allow 1 1/2 hours for class. Each module will take 2 weeks to complete.

Students will be responsible for answering the On Your Own and Study Guide questions after reading the module and participating in the discussion and review of these questions in class.  Each module also has a test which will be graded.

Some of the experiments will be done during class but others may need to be completed by the student at home.  Students are encouraged to do the experiments along with us in class whenever possible. Lab reports will be assigned for several of the experiments and are also graded.

About the teacher:

About the Teacher: My name is Debbie Mackin with HIS Creation Science. I received my BS in Medical Technology degree from the University of Tampa and my clinical certification from Duke University Medical Center, Department of Allied Health. After working in clinical labs for almost 12 years, I left to be a full time at home mom at the birth of my oldest. I have 2 children and have always homeschooled them (my oldest graduated in May 2014 and my youngest graduated in 2017). I have a passion to help kids see our Awesome Creator through the study of science! I am a firm believer that science and faith do not need to be separate but rather the study of science can confirm scripture and strengthen our faith. By studying the creation around us, we can better know our Creator. I look forward to seeing you in class as we learn more about our Awesome Creator!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
