Live Class with Grading
  • Includes certificate of completion
  • Class sessions recorded for later viewing

Prerequisite: taken fall semester course (private or group) or equivalent level

Introduce your student to the wonderful world of Chinese!

Ideal as a second language elective, students in this semester-long course will learn to speak, read, and write key Mandarin Chinese characters used in 95% of Chinese publications. The skills they will gain throughout this course will give them mastery of numerous everyday Chinese phrases, and provide them with essential stepping stones they may use to continue their Chinese studies.

Continue learning new riddles, students will apply the knowledge from 100+ vocabulary and grammar study mastered in the fall semester, and build up to over 200 characters and additional phrases derived from them in their reading comprehension. In addition to sentence patterns study, students will hone their composition skills in the spring term.

It is true that Chinese is a relatively challenging language to learn considering that it is not only non-alphabetic but also a tonal language, unlike many other languages. But it is also a fact that the majority of our students all learned to speak Mandarin given time and motivation, so it is certainly a task an average student can manage. Our classes attract many musicians and artists who are not only fascinated by the beautifully written characters but also by the way they sound. If you've got a student at home who loves to be challenged, he or she will be happily engaged in learning Chinese with this course!

The immersive multimedia-based approach used in ZhongWen has enabled our students to start to speak and read Chinese right away after learning a few Chinese riddles! This is a "well-kept secret " curriculum that has been used at the Stanford Chinese School in Palo Alto CA for over two decades and has a successful track record in Chinese schools from coast to coast. Students will have daily assignments to practice their listening, speaking and character writing skills independently with an interactive online program, and our weekly live classes reinforce their learning so they can advance systematically.

In addition to our regular weekly live class, we are offering our students an additional verbal practice session this year on Mondays 9-10 am. Attendance is optional, and our students have the option to send in audio recordings for my feedback should they prefer to work on their own time. Upon enrollment, you may also check to see other available weekly practice sessions if Mondays do not work for your student.

The curriculum is primarily focused on reading, listening to, and reciting riddles to introduce students to Chinese characters, pronunciation, and grammar. They then apply this knowledge in their reading comprehension exercises in each lesson and work on speaking and writing through our live classes and practice sessions. Course highlights include:

Chinese etymology study: Pictographs and ideograms in Chinese characters are studied closely in each lesson, so our students can learn the common "radicals" (the building blocks of many characters) and use the meaning clues (or "keys") to efficiently and effortlessly unlock the meaning of any Chinese character.

Mandarin Pronunciation: Essential Mandarin Chinese pronunciation is learned through daily listening and speaking assignments. Daily practice of reading out loud and frequent verbal practice in class with instruction enables our students to learn to speak and apply Mandarin accurately and effectively.

Communication skills: Students will learn to communicate their ideas both verbally and in written forms with this challenging curriculum. The solid vocabulary foundation built will serve as a valuable basis for students to understand more rigorous reading materials in its structured study materials, such as Chinese fables.

Grammar study: Students learn character usage and important grammar structures central to effective communication in Chinese through the extensive reading exercises offered in each lesson. Verbal and written translations are practiced frequently both in class and in homework assignments.

Grading is optional and FREE of charge for this course, and students will earn credits upon completion of the course, satisfying the prerequisite for Year 2 Mandarin Chinese for Young Learners.

Payment Plan of 3 installments of $60 is also available (see listing in "other products")

Recorded sessions will be available for students with any scheduling conflicts.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
