Christmas Maths, Problem solving & Counting for Gr 1-2

This Christmas Themed Mathematics Activity Book is geared towards children who are in the early stages of learning; more appropriately grade 1 or 2 although activities can be adapted for older or younger children. The activities are fun, illustrated with exciting Christmas themes and so break the monotony that can occur during lesson time. The beauty of this book is that it can travel! It can be used as an activity during long car travel, or even for those couple of hours in an evening when everyone wants and needs their own space.

The work is curriculum-based on research on the Assessment Standards utilised in South Africa. I am personally a fan of allowing every child to develop at his or her own pace and focus on the enhancing of those areas where clearly the child is steps ahead and gently encouraging and focusing on those areas where guidance and gentle assistance are required. Our aim is to make every activity fun and so encourage a love of learning.

In the activities in this book the learner is working towards inter alia the following Assessment Standards: Learning Outcome – Numbers, Operations & Relationships. Multiplies of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and possibly 6:

  • Counts to at least 34 numbers reliably;
  • Solves & can explain practical problems that involve sharing & grouping with whole numbers to at least 35 & then with solutions that include remainders;
  • Utilises critical thinking skills in trying to solve problems that require concentration and focus;
  • Counts in multiples of 2, 3, 4, 5 and possibly 6 reliably;
  • The learner is also working towards repeated addition with whole numbers and counts to at least 34 numbers reliably;
  • The learner recognises the symbol and the word of numbers zero to thirty four, but can possibly recognise higher numbers. Use of the word wall and flash cards are indispensible in these areas.
  • The learner is practicing simple multiplication and division;
  • He or she is counting to numbers as high as 100 in multiples of 5’s and 10’s (This is an additional exercise and a child enjoys pushing his or her own envelope.
  • The child also works towards picture/word/number recognition and uses his or her creativity to reinforce their knowledge and recognition of number sequencing.

While educator/parent notes are included throughout the book, these are simply a guide providing information on why the activity is being done and which areas it reinforces, giving the educator an indication of the child’s grasp of the activity or activities to date and enabling the educator/parent an opportunity for general assessment.

The answers to the questions are in the back of the book but I would encourage your child to do as many exercises as possible before checking the answer sheet. I would also encourage that this book be done over a period of lessons or days and not in “one sitting” to prevent monotony of one subject.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
