A Brief Financial History of the United States
Regular price: $2.99
Bundle price:
 $0.23
Format:
 PDF

This book was researched and written initially during the fall of 2008, as the current crisis first came to the forefront of our thoughts. It was updated again a year later, in November 2009.

I am not an economist, but I am an Economics teacher -- and I have enjoyed sorting through the history of our country in this area so that I could understand it well enough to share it with my students.

I find timelines the best way to keep history straight, and that’s what this book is, a brief annotated timeline of the financial history of the United States.

Don’t worry, I use footnotes liberally – I had to look up many of these financial expressions, people, events, and terms, and I share that information throughout the book.

I also h...

Bundle price:
 $0.75
Format:
 PDF

Mock Trial, or Youth Judicial as it is sometimes called, is one of the most enjoyable, and beneficial events that my children have participated in over the years.

As the coach, I enjoy Mock Trial immensely, and my goal is to have my students enjoy it as well. This story is meant to be an example of how a "Mock Trial" can go. If you are unfamiliar with the program, it will introduce you to it. If you are familiar with it, you may be able to recognize the "good" and "bad" teams in the story.

Goes well with the National Budget Activity

I was teaching an Economics class this week on the federal budget (where I have students look at previous numbers and try to work out their own budget proposals) and we kept running into similar questions: What does the Interior Department do? What exactly is the Department of Energy? What are the responsibilities of the Agriculture Department? Etc.

A “quick” look for those answers revealed just how difficult it was to find some of that information. I finally located websites for each of the departments and actually came up with some sort of a mission statement for each one. Some of the statements were fairly short, and not very definitive. Others were much more exhaustive (and exhausting...

Important Constitutional Documents
Regular price: $2.99
Bundle price:
 $0.90
Format:
 PDF

There are many, many documents that came before the U.S. Constitution, and contributed to it directly or indirectly. I have gathered together the ones that I found very useful in my studies of the Constitution. These work well for a "compare and contrast" study between any of the various documents and each other, and between these and the Constitution itself.

The following documents are included in this collection, some as excerpts, and some in their entirety.  Magna Carta (1215) The Mayflower Compact (1620) Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (1639) Massachusetts Body of Liberties (1641) English Bill of Rights (1689)  Resolutions of the Stamp Act (1765)  Fairfax County (Virginia) Resolves (1774) Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty or Give Me De...

National Budget Activity
Regular price: $0.00
Bundle price:
 $0.90
Format:
 PDF

If you are looking for an easy resource to help with the responsibilities of each department, you may also be interested in Catherine's Executive Departments Mini Unit.

I love using current events and current information to teach my government and economics students.  It is so much easier to relate to something that is actually in the news - and something that they can relate to.

Today (February 14, 2012) the President's new budget proposal was covered in a chart in the Wall Street Journal. As I looked at the chart, I realized that it would make a good activity to do with my junior high and high school students. I made a chart with the figures that the students could fill out, alone and in a group. They could use the data in the president's budget to determine what ...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
