Insect Life Cycles,
Including Butterflies

Ever tried to find a way to make insect life cycles interesting to your children?  It's not an easy task, but we have done that in this issue of Artistic Nature Magazine.

We start with the story of when we ordered caterpillars in the mail for our home school and watched each one spin a chrysalis and turn into a butterfly.  (The butterflies later landed on our kids' hands when we took a walk beside a nearby river.)  We also tell about our experiences with butterfly migrations.

Next, we show your kids the steps of complete metamorphosis in the life cycles of butterflies with a decoding activity to make learning the correct terms more fun.  We even provide you with Web links to videos that make what they are learning take wings.  But we don’t stop there.  We give you pictures in color of 12 North American butterflies, and their caterpillars, and in many cases, their chrysalises as well, with information to help them learn how to identify these 12 butterflies.  We even show you what flowers to plant if you want to attract butterflies to your garden.

We also share 4 different moths with your kids in color.  And since this is also an art magazine, we give your kids beautiful pictures to color of 10 of the butterflies and 3 of the moths, with special instructions to help your kids develop their art abilities as they color.  And we include butterfly stained-glass art so your kids can be creative and choose their own colors just for fun.  We give you over 50 pages on butterflies and moths, including a word search puzzle and many other puzzles, mazes and activity pages.

But we don’t stop there.  From there we go on to dragonflies and damselflies, including a colorful lifecycle illustration and very cute and easy-to-make dragonfly and damselfly chenille wire crafts, which we know your kids will enjoy.  You can add a magnet and put them on your fridge door.

We share about beetles with a life cycle illustration in color, some fun beetle poems, a beetle kaleidoscope to color, our own personal experiences, and kid-friendly articles about 2 giant beetles, one in Africa and another in the United States.  Your kids get to color these beetles and decode some word puzzles with beetle names as well.

Did you know that some cicadas live underground for 17 years before becoming winged adults for just a short time?  We share their story, plus we give you links to 4 online cicada videos and two photo sites that let you hear the sounds of different species of cicadas (and other singing insects as well).

We also teach your kids fascinating facts about mosquitoes, honey bees, bumblebees, wasps, and ants.  Your kids will learn about these social insects’ community lives, and discover more fun crafts to do, with our pompom bumblebee and chenille wire honeybee, which are irresistible and very cheap.  We give you photos and step-by-step instructions for each craft.  These professional photos were taken by 17-year-old homeschool grad, Jonathan Dunlap, who contributes his talents to this magazine in many different ways, inspiring your kids with what they could do someday.

Join us in this fascinating journey with our Butterfly and Insect Life Cycles issue of Artistic Nature Magazine.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
