Included is 1 history curriculum guide, including a list of books and other resources needed (parents can easily access most books at a local library or purchase them separately at reasonable prices).    Each guide in our "This Far by Faith" series is a complete, stand-alone, inclusive history package that can be completed in a single school year.

When we began marketing the "Our History, HIS-Story" series", the most common question we were asked regarded the age-appropriateness of the curriculum.  The general feedback was that parents wanted a similar product that would minister to an older child.   "This Far By Faith" is a product for the middle school (grades 5-8) level child.   Our commitment to the enjoyment of learning remains the same.  The approach to learning is still largely adapted from Charlotte Mason's living books school of thought: rich and engaging stories, read-aloud opportunities for parent/child interaction as well as time for student self-reading, and additional activities for deeper reflection.

However, as Susan Wise Bauer states in The Well-Trained Mind, 'somewhere around fourth grade...the mind begins to generalize, to question, to analyze--to develop the capacity for abstract thought...the student begins to connect all the facts she has learned and to discover the relationship among them.' (Bauer, p. 239)  We spend more time and effort on the societal, cultural, and even religious practices that allow slavery to exist; we delve into the thought processes and the people behind the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution; finally, we learn far more about the African-American leaders of the age, whose philosophies helped change a way of thinking and transition a people from victims of a cruel injustice into significant contributors in the making of a great and powerful nation.

The spine, or fundamental "textbook," for this two-part curriculum is Joy Hakim's A History of US series, which can also be found in public libraries or at bookstores nationwide.   We build upon Hakim's presentation of history with various activities to provide a Christian worldview, including a "Shining God's Light on our Journey" period of written and verbal expression throughout each book in the series.

This is an excellent addition to your homeschool library.   Happy learning!
