Early American Heroes

This book is intended to be used as a supplementary historical reader for the sixth to ninth grades, or for any other pupils from twelve to sixteen years of age. It is also designed for collateral reading in connection with the study of a formal text-book on early American history.

The period here included is the first fifty years of US national life. No attempt has been made, however, to present a connected account, or to furnish a bird's-eye view, of this half century.

The subjects have been arranged in chronological order. In a number of instances grade six students learned that, in the first reading, some of the stories were less difficult than others. From the nature of the subject-matter this is inevitable. For instance, it was found easier and doubtless more interesting, to read "The Patriot Spy" and "A Daring Exploit" before beginning "The Hero of Vincennes" and "The Crisis." "Old Ironsides" will at first probably appeal to more young people than "The Final Victory."

It is suggested that teachers, after becoming familiar with the general scope of this book and gauging the capabilities of their pupils, should, if they find it for the best interests of their classes, change the order of the chapters for the first reading. But in the second, or review reading, they should follow the chronological order.

The attention of educators is called to the questions (& answer sheets) for review, the pronunciation of proper names, and the reference books and supplementary reading in American history mentioned after the chapters. The index is made full for purposes of reference and review.

PURCHASER
I've tried to read the previews, to see which American Heros are covered. Mostly what each chapter is called or who is covered in each chapter. The Full Sized Preview won't open at all and the quick preview print is so small that I can't really read anything. Can you give me a list of the chapter headings? We're trying to teach our autistic son about American History, especially Jamestown to pre-American Revolution right now and plan quite a bit about the American Revolution next but need to get past this part of history first so that's the period I'm mostly concerned with right now so I would be happy with just that part and the knowledge there's more after that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
