...Or Should There? We take for granted that laws are a necessary part of society. But does everything need to be regulated? Do more laws make us more secure? Happier? A Brief Financial History of the United States
Regular price: $2.99
Bundle price:
 $1.16
Format:
 PDF

This book was researched and written initially during the fall of 2008, as the current crisis first came to the forefront of our thoughts. It was updated again a year later, in November 2009.

I am not an economist, but I am an Economics teacher -- and I have enjoyed sorting through the history of our country in this area so that I could understand it well enough to share it with my students.

I find timelines the best way to keep history straight, and that’s what this book is, a brief annotated timeline of the financial history of the United States.

Don’t worry, I use footnotes liberally – I had to look up many of these financial expressions, people, events, and terms, and I share that information throughout the book.

I also h...

Free Trade in Action: An Economics Game
Regular price: $0.99
Bundle price:
 $0.38
Format:
 PDF

This game is not so much an original idea, as much as an original handling of an old idea...Using trading cards to help students understand the benefits of free trade.

I had played this game in a teachers' workshop with real objects, and saw something similiar demonstrated in a teaching dvd, but until I came up with the idea of substituting cards for the actual items, I was not interested in using this activity in my Economics class. With the cards, the game was easy to play, and still very student-friendly.

The activity is written for a classroom setting.  If you want to do this with a group of less than 8 or 10, I'm confident it could be done - but you would have to be more creative to get the same points across that you can easily do with a lar...

Simply Put: A Study in Economics

 $0.20
Format:
 PDF

The two files have been combined into one. The Teacher Key includes several activiites, answers to the Lesson Review Questions, and a mid-term, final exam, and answers for both tests. (The tests are optional, but are included for those who need them.)

From Catherine's Preface to the book:

Economics gets a bad rap among so many, and yet as a long-time student and teacher of economics, I often wonder why. Maybe it’s because most economic textbooks are so boring. In fact, I started this book after I looked unsuccessfully for an economics textbook that I could recommend for high schoolers. I found few options that didn’t put me to sleep – and I like the topic! Thus began my desire to write an alternative economics textbook. Here it is, after more than two y...

The Economics of a Storm

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
