This 8-week unit covers the period of history leading up to World War II (from WWI to 1939) taking a look at causes and ideologies that drove the war machine of that day. Various issues and subjects surrounding this complex event are examined, including effects and efforts on the home front (in the US), life on the battlefield, the European vs. the Pacific theatre and the differences between those sections of the war, the Holocaust and other issues of racism and prejudice, war technology and other ideological factors. This unit is geared toward students in 5th grade on up, but can be used with modifications for younger students. Care will need to be taken by each teacher to select readers and read-alouds from the recommended resources that are appropriate to the maturity of her students and to determine how deeply to delve into the various subjects involved. Many hands-on activities and worksheets are included in this unit.
