Doesn’t every child wish they could fly? From those windy days when you could lean into the wind and get a feel for what it might be like to set sail in the wind, to feeling the strong tug of a kite in a good wind – flying captures the imagination of many children. And that is exactly how the first successful inventors of manned aircraft began – as children, playing with a flying toy and dreaming of the possibilities. From their playtime to their successful first flight, two preacher’s sons moved mankind in a new direction and eventually moved us into space exploration. Rich in history and science, flight is a topic of interest and offers plenty of learning opportunities. Studying flight, students will learn about the science of aviation along with what was involved in attaining the goal of flight for man. They will learn about the pursuit of the dream to fly, the many efforts to achieve that dream, and the perseverance required to reach the goal. As they learn about flight in this four-week study, students will begin to see how the development of flight and the history of the world since that development have been intertwined. They will learn about the daring pioneers of flight, and some of their wonderful adventures. The story of flight is an exciting one, and one that holds plenty of promise for the future.
