Summer 2017 American Sign Language 101

Live Class with Grading
  • Includes certificate of completion
  • Class sessions recorded for later viewing

**NOTE: ASL 101 will not be offered again until the summer or fall of 2018

This is the first in a series of American Sign Language classes. Students will learn vocabulary and grammar for conversational ASL as well as some basics about Deaf culture. In this course, students will begin training their brains to see language in a visual modality. The required book for this course is Signing Naturally Units 1-6. ASL 101 covers the first three units:

- Introducing oneself

- Exchanging personal information

- Discussing living situations

Students can expect to spend at least 30 minutes per day practicing and completing homework assignments. Homework is mandatory but is not graded. Homework will always be reviewed in class. Learning any new language can be overwhelming, but with daily practice students will be able to proudly show off their new skill. While many people think that sign language is simply English expressed in gestures, this couldn’t be further from the truth. ASL is a complex language with a unique syntax and grammar. Tests will be given and graded at the end of each unit. The semester will end with a final project that will give students an opportunity to display their new language.

** This class meets once a week for 2 hours (with a 10-15 minute break halfway through). This allows time for learning a new lesson and practicing during class. This course is heavily dependent on class participation from students.

** A webcam is required for this class. Because ASL is a visual language, it is necessary for me to see the students as they practice during class.

**The required book for this class is “Signing Naturally Student Workbook Units 1-6.” This book includes 2 DVDs. If you buy the book used, please make sure the DVDs are included. They are a necessary part of the class. Used books can be found on eBay and Amazon. There are also websites that allow you to rent the book for a semester (approx $38). This book retails for $85.00 new, but will be used for ASL 101 and  102. (UPDATE: I was recently told that if you call the publisher directly, you can purchase books that are new but were returned or may have bent covers for a cheaper price)

** Students will be required to watch YouTube videos created by me to practice vocabulary and complete some homework assignments.

** Students will be required to record themselves signing and submit the video to me for grading. This can be done with a webcam or any smartphone.

** Students will be required to meet with a partner from class online via Oovoo to practice conversational skills on a weekly basis. Ooovoo is a platform like skype that enables students to video chat. Accounts are free.

About the teacher:

Hi! My name is Marie Harvey. I am a homeschooling mom and a nationally certified sign language interpreter. I am so excited to teach your children the beautiful language that I have fallen in love with. Here’s a little about me:

I have an amazing 5th grader that I homeschool. I currently teach ASL (along with other subjects) to him and two other boys that we school with during the week. I have taught ASL classes at his co-op to 1st-5th graders and middle school students. In addition to ASL, I formally ran a science club where we met for labs twice a month.

I have been a sign language interpreter for 12 years, and have been nationally certified for 10 years. I interpret in a variety of settings including hospitals, mental health settings, and colleges.

My daughter is interested in this class, however, she will be in a week long summer camp in July. How do you/we handle class times that students can not attend?

All class sessions are recorded. Students can watch the recording to catch up on time that they've missed :-)

I apologize for any confusion; this class is open to ages 11-13 AND highschool. I will have the image changed to reflect the correct age groups.

I have two daughters. Do I have to pay separately for them?

Hi Judy,
You would have to register and pay for them both if you want their work graded. They could get away with sharing the book though.

What if I have multiple students who would like to take the class? Can they share the webcam? Would we need to pay the price times 2?

Hi Lia,
You would have to register each child separately if you want them both graded. They could share a webcam and a book though.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
