Did you know that 1 in every 5 people in the world

speak Chinese today?

Get a taste of learning Chinese in a fun and engaging way with a native speaker in this popular beginner class this fall!

The immersive multimedia-based approach used in this curriculum has been very successful in local Chinese schools for over two decades. In addition to live meetings weekly for active verbal practice, students have daily assignments to practice their listening, speaking and character writing skills independently with an interactive online program. Our weekly live classes reinforce their learning, and our small class size enables each student to participate fully in each live meeting so they can advance systematically.

Ideal as a second language elective, students in this semester long course will learn to speak, read, and write the key Mandarin Chinese characters used in 95% of Chinese publications.

Fall 2017 semester course will meet on Mondays & Wednesdays 11-12pm CST starting August 28th 2017

Recorded sessions will be available for students with any scheduling conflicts

Prior knowledge of Chinese is helpful but NOT required (students 12 and over may find our Integrated Chinese Year 1 more suitable with other age peers in the class)

Chinese etymology study: Pictograms and ideograms in Chinese characters are studied closely in each lesson, so our students can learn the common "radicals" (close to the building blocks of many characters) and use meaning clues (or "keys") to efficiently and effortlessly unlock the meaning of other characters.

Mandarin Pronunciation: Essential Mandarin Chinese pronunciation will be learned through daily listening and speaking assignments. Daily practice of reading out loud and frequent verbal practice in class with instructions enables our students to learn to speak and apply Mandarin accurately and effectively.

Communication skills: Students will learn to communicate their ideas in both verbal and written forms in this challenging curriculum. The solid vocabulary foundation gained in this section of the course will serve as a valuable foundation for students to help them to understand more rigorous reading materials with ease.

Grammar study: Students learn the character usage and important grammar structures central to effective communication in Chinese through the extensive reading exercises offered in each lesson. Verbal and written translation are practiced frequently both in class and in the homework assignments.

Grading is optional and FREE of charge for this course, and students will earn credits upon completion of the course, satisfying the prerequisite for Mandarin Chinese 2

Required textbook: Zhong Wen in Simplified Chinese Edition - detailed textbook order information is provided in your course homepage, available upon registration.

Note: this is a full payment plan for this semester course.  Optional 3 spaced installments of $30 each is also available (see "other listings")

Our weekly live class will meet in CurrClick's Live Virtual Classroom. Students will need a headset with microphone to be able to hear and speak to me, as well as verbally practice Mandarin during the class.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
