How The Turtle Got Its Shell, An African Tale, Picture Book

Quotes About This Product

How The Turtle Got Its Shell: **1992 winner of an American Library Association Notable Children's Recording Award**

“tells the traditional Swahili tale of how the turtle tricked the fierce leopard into giving a large and powerful drum to the sky god. The Swahili words are explained at the beginning of the story, and the animals' emotions are excellently conveyed in the telling. African chants and background music give the tale a sense of place and power.” -Booklist (American Library Assoc.)

“The interactive audiotape will be great fun for young children as they participate in the story and beat on their drums on cue. Classroom teachers and music teachers will want to use this book and tape to expose students to African folk tales and rhythmic patterns in a multicultural setting.” -School Library Journal

“Students who previously could not read and had little interest in reading were pleading to go to the listening center to hear and read this particular story.” -Beverly Watrous, Teacher, PS 169, Bronx

“Perfect additions to our folk tale library and our social studies, multi-cultural, and literature curricula.” -M. Reilly, Teacher, PS 31, Bronx “This African folktale read-along comes alive with the resonant voice of the Sky God and the background sounds of jungle drums and chants. After the elephant and ostrich fail to defeat the leopard, the persistent turtle outwits his adversary in this satisfying, rewarding, and exciting recording. The flip side encourages children to emphasize with several African animals and to imitate the voices and characters in the story.” -School Library Journal

See-More's Workshop's colorful picture books and Read Along audio are based on the musical puppet plays of New York City's award-winning Shadow Box Theatre. They capture the excitement of live theatre and are perfect for storytelling time and for youngsters learning to read. These wonderfully illustrated stories are filled with dramatic impact, fun voices, and imaginative imagery, making reading aloud extra fun! Excellent additions for your homeschool library, classroom, or listening corner.

The story begins “in the time when the turtle's back was soft,” and when Nyame the Sky God needed the drum of Osebo the Leopard for a great festival. “Bring it to me!” he called to the animals. Frightened of the fierce Leopard but determined to help Nyame, each of the animals tries to retrieve Osebo's drum for the Sky God. Kinyanga the swift Ostrich thinks her fast legs might be able to outrun Osebo, but frightened by Osebo's roar, she runs quickly back to Nyame empty handed. Even Tembo the mighty Elephant cannot use his great size and strength to get Osebo's drum. Scared and chased away by Osebo, Tembo the Elephant returns to Nyame: “Nyame, you will never take his drum!” he trumpets as he trembles. Then, to everyone's surprise, Akykiegie the little Turtle volunteers to try to get Osebo's drum for Nyame. In a tale of wit and wisdom, the little Turtle tricks the fierce Leopard, brings Nyame Osebo's drum, and is rewarded with a hard shell, a home of his own to protect his back wherever he goes. The powerful chanting and drumming of the companion audio of this Ashanti tale has earned it an ALA Notable Children's Recording citation.

This book is highly recommended for purchase with its companion Read-Along audio. Combined with the How The Turtle Got Its Shell picture book, the audio's rhythmic drums, rattles, and music of African storytelling invites your child to be an active participant in the story. Children will Read More With See-More-- our smiling hallmark puppet for which See-More's Workshop is named-- as they enjoy this African Ashanti creation myth. The book and audio set fit within state learning standards and literacy programs. See-More's Workshop's unique method of combining visual, aural, and kinesthetic learning (see the word, hear the word, and move along with the words) in these innovative books and audio “significantly contributes to raised reading scores and overall love of reading.” -Beverly Watrous, Reading Specialist

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
