My Book of State History

Quotes About This Product

Dear Ann,
Thank you so much for creating My Book of State History. I am a new homeschooler and need guidance on creating fun, meaningful studies for my daughter. We live in Virginia where history abounds; however, I wasn't sure how to do a study on the basic "things" of our state. This book helps me tremendously and helps me have a focus on where I am trying to go with the study and what I want her to learn. Her State History notebook is going to be filled with everything little thing about Virginia, and we are both very excited. What you have created is extremely valuable to me because you have saved me a lot of time, and I no longer worry about how to incorporate everything.
THANK YOU! God Bless, Laura Dawson

"I appreciate the "Notes to the Teacher" section at the end of the "My Book of State History." Your ideas, links, resources, and thorough research will save me a tremendous amount of time gathering the information needed. " ~ Sheri

"Our family has enjoyed "My Book of State History." It is fun, arranged well and covers much more information that I ever would have thought of. It is very user friendly, too! We certainly know a lot more about our state after this study. Now it's time do study the other 49! The "Notes to the Teacher" section is extremely helpful and the Appendix and Bibliography gave us great website and book ideas. This book has been very worthwhile and I wholeheartedly recommend it!" ~ Nancy Marentis

I have to recommend Ann Tatum's unit on State History. It is fabulous!! Especially for those of us who don't even know where to start!! The kids LOVE it, I LOVE it and she really brings you through the study feeling like you've accomplished a lot. It's so easy and fun, I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Wow, I sound like a commercial...well, really, I love it! Anything to make my life easier!" ~ A California Homeschool Mom

"I must say, the e-books we have that you have done are just outstanding. I wouldn't hesitate buying any of them as I know they will be worthwhile!" ~ A satisfied homeschool mom!

This 27-page unit is a very relaxed study of the history, geography, and symbols of your state designed to help your elementary-aged children learn how to find information about their state on their own and relate it to others in an understandable way. When you're finished, each of your children will have their own notebook of information that they have completed themselves!

This unit study includes:

  • where your state is located within the U.S.
  • the difference between a physical and political map
  • location of important physical features in your state, ie. rivers, mountains, lakes
  • names of neighboring states

  • Native American Indians
  • explorers
  • early settlers
  • famous people from your state
  • reproducible time line
  • native plants
  • native animals
  • weather
Teacher helps:
  • 4 pages of notes on how to use this study to help
your child create their own State History notebook
  • bibliography of helpful books - easily found in your public library
  • ...and don't worry Mom, I provide websites for FREE printable outline maps &
most of the information you'll need to complete this book
State Symbols

State Song

Field Trip Ideas

and more about your capitol, county, city, & governor!

Twenty-one pages are ready-to-use notebook pages for your child to complete. These can be printed off and 3-hole punched for a folder or slipped into page protectors and put in a binder. All pages are reproduciblefor your families personal use.

I created this study for my own 10-year-old daughter. She did hers on states we have lived in, California and Texas, but your child will fill in the pages with information about your state, states you've traveled to, or all 50 states! I like to call these "notebook starters" because they get the kids started thinking and they always add something to the pages I created.

All you absolutely need for this unit is this ebook (pdf format), a computer, Adobe Acrobat Reader (available FREE on their website), paper, pencils, a library card, and internet access!

This product is pretty well done. It covers a lot of bases. I would have preferred that it stressed the history side of things a little more heavily. Having a timeline is good, but leading questions about things to write about the historic events would [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
