Mathcraft Geometry: Perimeter and Area
by Deborah G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/03/2014 17:00:45

I was browsing Currclick and saw this title. I made the mistake of reading it out loud and had three girls begging me to get it for them. We are in the middle of break so they haven't done the work, but I read through it.

Pros The concepts are presented logically and clearly. Students are presented an opportunity to practice in their own Minecraft world and the real world.

Cons: For area, the units are spelled out in read of the standard abreviations [square meters instead of m(2)]. The hands on work is limited, not enough to cement the concept in a child's mind if this is the only resource used on the topic

This is a good, fun supplement, that students interested in Minecraft will enjoy.

I can't wait for my kiddos to use this. They love mine craft and are learning perimeter and area in their official math curriculum. Lots of times I will pull out one of these fun units and they love it and don't know they are doing math!

This unit is a great way to reinforce the concepts of perimeter and area. What is great is that the explanations are done so using realistic objects instead of attempting to explain using a mathematical image. Even better is that this connects with Minecraft so the skills can be reinforced in a fun way while the knowledge is being applied. Learning that doesn't feel like learning!
