Math Mammoth, Grade 3
I always take an extra hard look at math programs. It is easy to take math drills, throw them on a page, and add some pretty pictures to make it look like a quality program, but there is no fluff here. Math Mammoth deserves recognition for its ability to create a truly high quality math program.
Each chapter begins with a description of concepts being taught, giving the teacher an overall understanding of the chapter goals. The worksheets themselves include instructions for the student that are clear. A strong self starter will easily be able to start her work alone. When necessary, parents will easily be able to jump in, read along, and help guide the student. Each chapter ends in a review. An answer book is supplied for all of the problems.
Visually, the pages are easy to follow. Some color is used, but only enough to help you focus on the section in use. The page is broken into boxes, which I think helps reduce the "overwhelmed" feeling that can come with a page of math work. Often pictures are used to help explain the concepts being taught, and printable cutout worksheets are included for a few of the geometry concepts.
My favorite part of this program is that it relies on strategies and an overall understanding of math concepts to solve problems. Rather than using drills and memorization to simply get it done, Math Mammoth approaches concepts from different angles, helping the child understand the relationship between problems and solutions. I feel this is a quality program which will help form a solid foundation for mathematics.
