Jim Mueller ( A.K.A. Science Jim ) has been deeply involved with science education for over ten years. Here's How it Works:

1. You will meet with your coach in a group setting 3 times in our live class environment. Your coach will help you choose a project and will teach you about what's important in a good science fair project. They will help give you feedback and guidance on your project. You will also get a chance to encourage your teammates and get feedback from them. Here's a great website with some ideas if you need some tips.  http://www.all-science-fair-projects.com/>

2. You must come to the first team meeting with some ideas about what you would like to do for your science fair project.

3. There are other teams competing against you! All the science projects will be scored individually. Individual points will contribute to an overall team score so you can help your team win. See below to find out about scoring and categories.

4. On April 19th, students will need to have a video of their science fair project uploaded to to our online Student Network. This network is by invitation only. Your teacher will e-mail you the invitation when you sign up for this class. Please note: For your protection, your science fair videos will be viewed only by the other students and parents participating in the science fair. (Please note: coaches will not be able to help you with creating your video. You or your parents must be capable of creating a video and uploading it to the internet in order to participate. The focus of our coaches must be on the science. If you cannot film or upload a video, this science fair is not for you.

Science Fair Project Videos must include:
A video demonstration of and explanation of the project.
You (and not your parents) must do the talking and explaining.
Be sure and wear your team colors!
Please mention your age, first name, grade, and your team color on in the video
Videos should not be more than 4 minutes long

Individual Categories:
Ages 10-12: first, second and third place
Ages 13 and up: first, second and third place

Team Categories:
Creativity: first place
Results: first place
Skills: first place
Thoroughness: first place

Individual Projects will contribute toward their team's success and will be judged based on: Creativity, results, skills, and thoroughness. We will pick the top 3 videos in each age category. These videos will appear on CurrClick.com <http://currclick.com/> on Earth Day, April 22nd and CurrClickers will decide who gets first, second or third. Team winner announcements will appear on the homepage on April 22nd as well.

Prizes: All 3 winners in each category will win a "My First Lab Duo-Scope Microscope." This microscope has received excellent reviews from parents and teachers. The Duo-Scope is a dual functioning biological microscope that incorporates modified objectives with dual cool LED illumination! This allows the user to view both microscopic sized specimens on slides as well as macroscopic (solid) objects like bugs, stamps and coins!

Team winners will not receive prizes, but will be mentioned on our homepage on April 22nd.

Class Information:

Topic: Ecosystems 2

Dates: Wednesday April 7, 14, and 27th

Time: 4pm Central (5pm EST)

Length of class: 45 minutes

Grades: 5-10

This live class is designed to support the Understanding Science Series unit books. Each of the live classes in this series will meet weekly for 45 minutes for three weeks. The lessons will enhance the materials found in the unit book. The live class will feature labs and projects, allow for discussion and question/answer sessions as well as an opportunity for indvidualized grading, support, and feedback.  Additional support will occur via a blog that can be found at ning.com (students will receive an invite to join this blog upon purchase).

The next title offered in the series will be Understanding Ecosystems and Biomes part 2. This class will begin on April 7th and end on April 27th.  This course will include the following:

• 3 live teaching sessions that will take the comprehension beyond the questions offered in the unit study booklet.
• 1 month of continuous blogging with discussion questions being entered by the teacher weekly that will challenge the students and provide additional support.
• An opportunity for grading of the projects included in the unit packet.

The class is recommended for students that are reading and writing from the 5th to 10th Grade levels.  The feedback will be individualized based on the students grade level.

Schedule

This class will begin on April 7.  Classes will be held April 7, 14, and 27th.  The class will meet for three 45 minute sessions on Wednesdays from 4- 4:45 central time (5-5:45pm Eastern Time Zone).

About the Teacher

Crystal Rende is the owner/editor of New Learning Publishing.  She has co-authored numerous titles available through New Learning Publishing.  Mrs. Rende is certified in Elementary (grades pre-k to 6), General Science, and Biology.  Currently she is a middle school science teacher in New York State. She has been teaching middle school for over 12 years. During this time she has taught 7th and 8th grade and Living Environment (biology) courses.  Mrs. Rende has worked on numerous curriculum development projects for elementary, middle school, and high school science programs.  She has participated in the NY State test writing program.  Mrs. Rende is currently completing her doctorate in educational leadership through the University of Rochester where she focuses on professional development and school administration.

Force is a fascinating and mysterious area of physics.  Einstein himself called force "spooky action from a distance".  How can one thing effect another thing over, potentially, hundreds of thousands of miles with out ever touching it i.e. the Sun and the Earth?  How does a magnet hold itself to the refrigerator even though it can't hold itself to the wall?   To be honest, nobody knows the complete answers to these questions but we are going to have a lot of fun getting into it!  We will cover gravity, magnetism, static electricity and more as we take a step into the wonderful world of forces. Newton’s Laws of Motion

Join Science Jim and explore Newton’s groundbreaking discoveries as we discuss gravity, momentum, acceleration and all three of Newton’s laws of motion.  What does Newton’s first law have to do with getting ketchup out of a bottle?  Why should all amusement parks be called NewtonLand?  What do Newton’s laws have to do with me riding my skateboard (and wearing my helmet)?  This class will make you realize how key Newton’s laws are to everyday life and will have you seeing them everywhere!  The lessons in the free Bite-Size Physics: Mechanics eBook accompany each online class and are packed with experiments and activities that you can do at home.  Each class is recorded so you can watch them whenever, and as often as, you’d like.
