Tasha Swearingen (Lessons in Pajamas)
"Where creativity and curiosity hold the reins in learning."
There's a difference in being taught something and actually learning something.
That's the philosophy behind The Creative Café, whose mission is to help other homeschooling families feel an exuberant joy and excitement for learning.
At this time, Tasha Swearingen has been homeschooling her 4 children for the past 12 years. Over the years, she's also juggled working from home full-time, since she has always homeschooled. She's worked as a (published) Writer, Senior Content Editor, Proofreader, Copy Editor, and English tutor. Her experiences working with other children include serving as an AWANA leader, a Sunday School teacher, a homeschooling co-op teacher (of a lapbooking class and a preschool Bible class), and as a volunteer teacher's aide in an elementary school.
Tasha (who runs The Creative Café) presents and creates all materials from either a neutral or a Christian worldview, depending on the subject. As a homeschooler, she describes her teaching style as "relaxed yet intentional; delightful and creative; and often led by her [my] children's interests." To that end, Tasha enjoys teaching her children by capitalizing on their interests, exposing them to new things, and working with them through natural, spontaneous learning. She also teaches through hands-on unit studies, most of which she creates herself.
As a very hands-on homeschooler, she believes that 1) engaged teaching, 2) natural curiosity, and 3) uninhibited learning are three key components that will lead to a far greater depth of learning (and retention) than having children pour over stacks of textbooks for 13 years. Both she and her husband, along with their children, enjoy spending their days involved in natural learning and unit studies she puts together. She does like to teach Arithmetic in somewhat of a sequence, though.
Tasha feels there is no greater reward in homeschooling than watching her children's eyes light up, as they get excited about yet another learning experience upon which they've stumbled on their own. To her, watching the enthusiasm and excitement build as they anticipate researching and learning about their new findings reinforces that she and her husband have chosen the best educational path for their family.
