Americana Newspaper Reporting

Learn Writing the Fun Way—Create your own Newspaper!

Explore the newspaper world and learn to write like a reporter while you read your way through American history classics in Americana Newspaper Reporting, a Middle School English Course.

Start with the Anatomy of a Newspaper—become familiar with the different sections of a newspaper.

Learn to be a good reporter, uncovering Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?

You will write several articles as you travel through time in American history.

Learn to write headlines, bylines, photo captions, news articles, features articles, classified ads, editorials, sports articles, food articles, and reviews.

Try your hand at cartoons, including editorial cartoons, ads, and photography.

Next, it’s time to put together your own family, neighborhood, local church, or homeschool co-op newspaper. You will layout and publish your own newspaper with articles, classifieds, ads, editorials, photos, and advice column.

You will read two books per month. Classic literature, of course.

You will read the following books:

  • Under Drake’s Flag by G.A. Henty
  • The Secret Mission: A Huguenot’s Dangerous Adventure in the Land of Persecution by A. Van Der Jagt
  • Carry On Mr. Bowditch by Jean Latham
  • The White Seneca by William W. Canfield
  • John Treegate’s Musket by Leonard Wibberly
  • Rebel’s Keep by Douglas Bond
  • The Journeyman by Elizabeth Yates
  • The House of Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne
  • The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
  • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
  • Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
  • With Lee in Virginia by G.A. Henty
  • Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
  • Ragged Dick by Horatio Algiers, Jr.
  • Freckles by Gene Stratten Porter
  • Julie by Catherine Marshall
  • The Incredible Journey by Shella Burnford

If you can't find all the books on the list or would rather read something else, there is a list of substitutes in the back. This list also includes suggestions for growing readers (a little behind grade level) and advanced readers.

Grammar & Spelling

This course does include learning to use the editing marks that copy editors use, but it does NOT teach grammar or spelling. You will need to purchase an additional grammar and spelling book to supplement this course.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
