MIRL Fractions, Percents, Decimals I

The Fractions, Percents, Decimals I workbook focuses on real-world situations that may be effectively analyzed using proportional reasoning concepts such as fractions, percents, and unit conversion. From figuring out how much money is saved on a sale to determining how much of each ingredient to use when doubling a favorite cookie recipe, learners get to use mathematics in meaningful ways. Rest assured that each activity integrates real world information not just "realistic" data. These are real companies (e.g. Aeropostale, Hershey's) and real world issues.

"I worked with a Grade 7/8 class on some of the worksheets. The students really got engaged with the "Shopping the Sale " worksheet, partly because "Aeropostale" is really "in" right now (indeed, almost half of the girls in the class were WEARING something by Aeropostale on the day we did this!), and partly because the "on-line" prices quoted were quite a bargain compared to what students pay here! In addition to solving the questions on the worksheet, students wanted to extend the problems even further! (It's not often you get to hear, "Can we do more math?" from Gr. 7s and 8s!)"

The mathematical objectives of each activity are clearly specified on the Activity Objectives page following this introduction. Through the workbook series, we have consistently sought to address the content and process standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

There are multiple ways to use the activities in a teaching environment. Many teachers find that the activities are an excellent tool for stimulating mathematical discussions in a small group setting. Due to the challenging nature of each activity, group members are motivated to brainstorm problem solving strategies together. The interesting real world contexts motivate them to want to solve the problems. The activities may also be used for individual projects and class-wide discussions.

As a ready-resource for teachers, the workbook also includes completely worked out solutions for each activity. To make it easier for teachers to assess student work, the solutions are included on a duplicate copy of each activity.

We hope you enjoy the activities! We continue to increase the number of workbooks in the Make It Real Learning workbook series. Please visit for the most current list of activities. Thanks!

For my boys that ask "when will I ever use this math?", this ebook helps provide those hands-on, real-life applications. My only wish is that there were more problems included in the ebook. So far, I have used this particular ebook with my el [...]

The whole idea of this series is awesome. This book, while being tons of fun, was really educational. The "Pieces of Chocolate" projects were not easy, but the thought of eating the manipulatives kept my daughter going. The recipes are not ju [...]

I am very pleased with this study! I was able to incorporate it into both my children's lessons. It was easy to use and understand for both of them. They also pointed out how math does apply in everyday life. Which was wonderful to see them grasp. I wa [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
